The Paterson Family

From Dumfriesshire, Scotland to Ontario, Canada

Children of James Paterson Jr. and Jane Irving:
Andrew Rae Paterson

Andrew Rae Paterson was born on November 10, 1866 in Cummertrees, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.  The 1871 census shows him living in Cummertrees with his parents and siblings.

According to census records, Andrew immigrated to Canada in 1884.  He married Emmeline Bartlett in Chatham, Ontario, on August 27, 1890.  They had two children: Sydney Rae (1891) and Garnett James (1893).

Andrew moved to the United States around 1898.  In 1900 he was living with his sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Joseph Hodgson, in Cleveland, Ohio.  Andrew was working as a book keeper.  Emmeline was not shown as a member of the household at that time so perhaps she stayed in Chatham with the two children while he explored their options in the United States..

The 1910 census showed Andrew, Emmeline, and their two children living in Detroit.  He worked for the railroad as did his son Sydney.  Garnett, who was 16, worked as an apprentice at an auto manufacturing plant.

In 1917, Sydney registered for the draft.  The record showed that he was married at the time.  Garnett also registered for the draft.  He was listed as a single man in 1917.

The 1920 census showed Andrew, Emmeline, and their son Garnett renting a house in Detroit.  Andrew was the chief clerk in the accounting department of the railroad.  Garnett was a cashier for the railroad.

By 1930, Andrew and Emmeline were living alone in Detroit.  They were still renting and he was still working for a railroad, although it was listed by the census as an electric railroad, so perhaps it was a street car company.  Other census records from 1930 showed Garnett renting a home elsewhere in Detroit.  Garnett was married to a woman by the name of Marie.  They had a child by the name of Mary E.

No other information has been found for Andrew, Emmeline, Sydney, or Garnett.
